This Premier League season will be like no other. The World Cup taking away a month of domestic action could have a serious impact on clubs, but everybody’s eyes will be on what’s going on at the biggest competition in world football.
A lot has changed at Arsenal over the last 12 months. Just four of our players participated at Euro 2020, which isn’t great at all for a club as big as ours. At the World Cup this year, however, we could easily see that number quadruple.

England: Bukayo Saka, Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale and Emile Smith Rowe
After getting ever so close to lifting the Euros last year, England will fancy their chances in Qatar.
The Three Lions have a really good squad at the moment, and we’ll be shocked if at least three of our four English stars – Saka, Ramsdale, White and Smith Rowe – don’t get called up.
Lack of regular opportunities at Arsenal for Smith Rowe may cost him his chance, but if he impresses in the next two months, Gareth Southgate may well be forced to take him along. Live Cricket
Brazil: Gabriel Jesus, Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Magalhaes
Edu’s presence at Arsenal has helped us sign a few fantastic players from Brazil, and three of them are regulars under Mikel Arteta now.
Jesus is almost guaranteed to receive a call-up to the Brazilian squad for the World Cup. Martinelli and Magalhaes have started the season brilliantly as well, and we expect both of them to be in Qatar this winter.
When Germany won the World Cup in 2014, three Arsenal stars came home with winners medals – Lukas Podolski, Per Mertesacker and Mesut Ozil. We won’t be surprised if our three Brazilians manage to do the same this winter.
Portugal: Cedric Soares and Fabio Vieira
Portugal, like many other countries, have a really strong squad, and it will be really difficult for Arsenal’s two Portuguese players to make the cut.
However, Vieira will be a regular when the Europa League kicks off in two weeks’ time. Cedric could get some game time too in the competition, and there’s a very good chance they will impress against the smaller teams in the group stages.
That could catch Portugal boss Fernando Santos’ eye ahead of the World Cup in Qatar later this year.
USA: Matt Turner and Auston Trusty
Arsenal signed Turner from New England Revolution this summer, while Trusty was brought in from Stan Kroenke’s Colorado Rapids in January.
Turner has 18 caps for America and is highly regarded in the national team. He is very likely to be called up to the squad, and Trusty could well join him.
The 24-year-old was sent to Birmingham City on loan at the start of the season, and he has impressed. He’s yet to make his debut for the United States, but if he continues to perform well in the Championship, his chances of getting on the plane will increase.
France: William Saliba
Defending champions France will go into the World Cup this year as one of the favourites.
Didier Deschamps has a phenomenal side at his disposal, but we’ll be really surprised if he ignores William Saliba’s incredible performances at Arsenal.
The France boss handed the youngster his international debut earlier this year. He impressed for Les Blues as well, and even though there are many exceptional French centre-backs, we expect Saliba to get on the plane to Qatar this winter.
Switzerland: Granit Xhaka
As long as Xhaka’s fit, he’s going to the World Cup in Qatar.
The 29-year-old is the captain of the Swiss national team. He was unbelievable for them at the Euros last year, and he seems to have reinvented himself under Arteta at Arsenal this season.
Switzerland are stuck in a tricky group with Brazil, Serbia and Cameroon, but if Xhaka plays as well as he did at the Euros last year, he should lead his side past the group stages.
Ghana: Thomas Partey
Another Arsenal player who is the captain of his national team, Partey will almost surely be at the World Cup later this year.
The former Atletico Madrid man has been quietly brilliant for the Gunners this season. He hasn’t done anything spectacular yet, but his performances in the base of our midfield have been excellent, and he’s one of the biggest reasons why we’ve looked so good.
Partey will be Ghana’s main man at the World Cup in Qatar this November.
Belgium: Albert Sambi Lokonga
Lokonga’s case is very similar to Vieira’s.
The young Belgian won’t play a lot for Arsenal in the Premier League, which is a blow for his chances to get on the plane to the World Cup at the end of this year.
However, Lokonga will likely play every game in the Europa League group stages. That will give him the opportunity to show Roberto Martinez what he’s all about. If he impresses, he could get the call-up.
Japan: Takehiro Tomiyasu
Tomiyasu is yet to start a game for Arsenal this season, but we all know how good he is when he’s fully fit.
The Japan international joined us last year and he became an instant fan favourite. He was one of our best players last season, and he’s a key player for his country as well.
Although Tomiyasu mostly plays as a right-back at Arsenal, he’s a centre-half for Japan. It will be interesting to see how he fares at the World Cup in Qatar.
Spain: Hector Bellerin
Yes, the right-back is on his way out of Arsenal, but at the time of writing, he’s still a Gunner.
Bellerin had a really good campaign on loan at Real Betis last season. If he secures a move back to La Liga and becomes a regular starter, there’s a very good chance he will make it into the Spanish national team.
If Bellerin does make the Spain squad, he could come up against the man who replaced him at Arsenal in the group stages – Tomiyasu.
Mexico: Marcelo Flores
18-year-old Flores is one of Arsenal’s most talented youngsters. He had the chance to represent both England and Canada at international level, but he decided earlier this year that will play for Mexico.
The teenager is highly rated by everyone around the Mexican national team, with manager Gerardo Martinez handing him three international caps already.
Arsenal have loaned Flores out to Spanish side Real Oviedo for the whole of this season. He is expected to play regularly there, and that will boost his chances of making it into the Mexican squad for the World Cup.
Tunisia: Omar Rekik
Rekik was born in Helmond in the Netherlands and even represented the Dutch under-18s at international level. However, he switched his allegiances to Tunisia in 2018 and has represented them on three occasions so far.
The 20-year-old joined Arsenal from Hertha Berlin in January last year. He only played for the under-23s, but he has been given a chance to play senior football this season having been sent out on loan to Sparta Rotterdam.
Rekik was a part of Tunisia’s AFCON squad earlier this year, and it’s likely that he will be called up again for the World Cup in a few months’ time.
