As the debate over the possible restructuring of the Antigua and Barbuda Cricket Association’s (ABCA) Two Day Cricket Competition intensifies, President of the Liberta Sports Club and former West Indies fast bowler, Kenneth Benjamin, has pledged to put his proposal in writing.Online Cricket Betting
Benjamin has publicly proposed that the unpopular Two Day format be revisited and possibly move to a franchise type set-up which could see some teams joining forces and become one franchise to contest the competition.
The proposal is seemingly an unpopular one with the other clubs who argue that the new approach may cause a dip in participation, but Benjamin believes the opposite will happen and that over time the quality of play will improve.
“I will write a paper if the association wants one, but it is important that from a holistic development, because I heard ‘Sir’ Henderson [Bass] and he is right. But what we are seeing there [at the senior level] are symptoms of what is happening at the lower level. What we’re seeing up there can’t be solved up there. It has to be fixed down here,” he said.
“People should curse Phil Simmons because the team is losing and they have their rights, but Phil Simmons can’t help those guys who can’t rotate singles and who can’t knock boundaries and so on, because those things should have been done before they got to that level,” he added. Live Cricket
The proposal also calls for the formation of development/feeder teams for which players who may not immediately get the nod to play in the first teams, could hone their skills and eventually graduate to the franchise’s main team.
Benjamin said players must be allowed to prove they have what it takes to compete at the highest level.
“If the coaches think that you have to play in the development team for the first couple of games because they think you don’t cut it for the first team, they have to live with that because we can’t get away from it. Everybody cannot play in the first 11 and I think that is one of the problems we’re having with the Two Day whereas soon as a player does not play, he wants a transfer or he doesn’t go back, and this is one of the problems,” he said.
“If two teams merge then, obviously, there will be a second 11 which is a development 11. So, if you have to play in this 11 this week and perform and prove your worth, then what is so wrong? I think players have to understand and coaches have to make tough decisions,” he added.
Meanwhile, president and coach of the Jennings Cricket Club, Glen Miller, who has opposed the suggestion from the onset, said that although he agrees that the Two Day Cricket needs to be revamped, he does not agree with any proposal calling for the merging of teams.
“If Flipper does it the way he wants it to be done, a lot of people will stop playing the game. If you have problems already, as he just mentioned, and you decide to merge teams, then you realise that not everyone wants to come over to Jennings because not everybody likes Miller [or] not everyone likes Flipper. But at the end of the day, let the game play and we can find other ways to improve it,” he said.
Clubs recently met with the ABCA to discuss the way forward for the Two Day competition with the president, Leon Rodney, calling the talks fruitful.
